Planned Giving

Include the FRBC in your estate plans to leave a lasting legacy of plant protection. With just a little planning, you can help to make sure that threatened plants are conserved for generations to come.

How You Benefit:

  1. You can decide how much to give.

  2. Your bequest costs you nothing now - you retain control of your assets during your lifetime. And your bequest is revocable, which means it can be changed or modified whenever you decide to change your estate planning documents.

  3. Bequest gifts are often exempt from federal estate taxes, so if your estate is taxable, the charitable deduction may offset taxes. (But you should only rely on a tax professional in determining the tax implications of any gift or bequest.)

Ways to Support the FRBC:

  1. Name the Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy as a beneficiary in your will. (Sample language can be found below.)

  2. Make the Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or life insurance policy.

  3. Name the Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy as the beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust.

Ideally, your bequest is best utilized by us if unrestricted. If you wish to have your bequest go to a specific purpose, or if you wish to bequest specific personal property or real estate, please get in touch with us in advance to discuss.

Sample Bequest Language:

Below is some sample language to help you get started, but you should speak with your attorney to help you include a bequest to the FRBC in your estate plan. The suggested language is not intended as legal advice; only an attorney can advise you on what language might be best. Please be sure to use the legal name and address of the FRBC: Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, 1818 Hastings Ave., Port Townsend, WA 98368, Federal Tax ID #82-2313514.

Bequest of a Specific Dollar Amount: I hereby give, devise, and bequeath _________ and No/100 dollars ($___) to the Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, a nonprofit organization located at 1818 Hastings Ave., Port Townsend, WA 98368, Federal Tax ID #82-2313514, for its general tax exempt purposes and without other restrictions as to use.

Residual Bequest: A residual bequest is made from the balance of an estate after the will or trust has given away each of the specific bequests. A common residual bequest involves leaving a percentage of the residue of the estate to charity.

I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, a nonprofit organization located at 1818 Hastings Ave., Port Townsend, WA 98368, Federal Tax ID #82-2313514, (ALL OR A PERCENTAGE) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to be used for Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy’s general tax exempt purposes and without other restrictions as to use.

Contingent Bequest: If (primary beneficiary) does not survive me, then I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, a nonprofit organization located at 1818 Hastings Ave., Port Townsend, WA 98368, Federal Tax ID #82-2313514, (DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY) to be used for Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy’s general tax exempt purposes and without other restrictions as to use.

What happens to my bequest after it has been received by the FRBC and the FRBC ceases to exist at some future date?
The IRS requires when forming a 501 (c) (3), that another nonprofit organization be designated to receive all assets should this nonprofit entity no longer continue to operate as a nonprofit. The Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy has designated the Rhododendron Species Botanic Garden for this role as their mission is in keeping with the core values of the FRBC.
